AIRPORT ARRIVAL INFORMATION

ARRIVAL AT PENANG AIRPORT

If you arrive at the Penang Airport via Bangkok or Singapore, please follow the International Arrival sign to the immigration checkpoint to get your passport endorsed. After that proceed downstair to claim your luggage.

If you arrive from KLIA where you have already had your passport endorsed, please follow the Domestic Arrival sign and proceed downstair to claim your luggage.

During this period you may wish to purchase duty free goods before going out of the terminal building. (NOTE: Malaysia taxes heavily on liquor & cigarette items. Beer & liquor drinks are thus relatively more expensive outside).

Upon getting past the luggage checkpoint you will get to public gallery of the arrival area. Turn right 45 degree and proceed to the right-end of the hall to the taxi counter to purchase your taxi coupon. The price for a one-way taxi ride to the hotel resorts in Batu Ferringghi is fixed and costs RM60 (about US$16). Each taxi can seat 4 persons. The journey to Batu Ferringhi takes about 45 minutes.  (Note: there may be surcharges for late night taxi travel after 12:00 midnight).

You may also wish to contact the hotel which you have booked in advanced to have you picked up. Most hotels provide such a service. Check whether you need to pay for this service or not.

Except for the invited guests/keynote speakers, the Organizing Committee will not be picking the participants from the airport. However, please e-mail us your flight schedule so that we may assist by letting the Secretariat collate the arriving times of participants. If there are sufficient people arriving around the same time, the Secretariat will either arrange for a bus to ferry them from the Airport to the hotels, or coordinate the sharing of taxis. Please contact Ms Siti Salina (Siti Salina Shaik Abdul Rahman <nuralya99@yahoo.com> ).

NOTE on taxi travel in Penang: The mass transport is somewhat inefficient in the city. Bus commutes between Batu Ferringhi and the city at about 30-45 minute intervals, and sometimes not regular at all. The government has just enforced the ruling that taxi must use meters. So please insist on using meter when you enter a taxi.  It costs about RM17 from Batu Ferringhi to the city centre based on the taxi meter (minimum charge RM3 when you take a taxi ride). Distance travel within Penang is usually not large, so do not accept exorbitant charges.
