Introduction:
As a traditional construction material, timber has been used as structural members in many civil engineering construction works long before the usage of concrete and steel. However, the current construction scenarios exhibit that the usage of timber is no longer popular since the widespread utilization of concrete and steel. In the past, timber was widely used as pillars (columns) beams, railway sleepers, rafters, girders, and roof trusses. Most of these structural members have now been replaced by concrete and steel, whereas the usage of timber has been limited to non-structural application such as door frame, window frame and ceiling. Due to lack of knowledge in design and the selection of a suitable timber species, this material is now rarely used. Nonetheless, due to its esthetical values, timber is still widely used in the construction of chalets, houses and resorts for the tourism industries.
In order to obtain a structure with sufficient rigidity and strength, appropriate design methods and engineering judgements are required. For this reason, MS 544; 1978 has been established to aid in structural design of timber. In 2001, the MS 544 standard has been amended and updated by incorporating local data representing local timber resources. Nevertheless, the usage of this standard as guideline in timber design is still limited due to lack of exposure to the practicing engineers.
Hence, the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia is taking a head start in promoting the usage of the MS 544:2001 in timber design. The “Short Courses on Structural Timber Design to MS 544” will focus on the application of the latest Malaysian Standard MS 544:2001 in structural timber design process. Issues on safety and economy pertaining to structural timber design will also be introduced. In addition, current issues on durability, preservation and fire protection of timber structure will also be discussed.
