This conference emphasises the balance between conventional economic development (growth and productivity enhancement) and well-being not only of current but also future generations. Including the welfare of future generations involves the preservation of natural resources, energy, reduction of emissions, resilience of ecosystems etc. through appropriate production and consumption patterns. During our panels and sessions we will try to respond to the following questions: Can both goals: sustainability and growth based economic development be achieved at the same time? If that is possible, what kind of growth advances sustainability, in particular in emerging economies, and what needs to change in our practices and believes to attain a balance between preserving natural systems, given their absolute limits, and further progress in terms of economic development? What kind of innovations in terms of policy, institutions and social mechanisms can we envision to ensure “sustainable development” that warrants the name? These questions need to be answered not only on the level of the individual company and household, but also on the level of communities and whole nations. Yet, if sustainability and economic growth are not compatible or not any more compatible at a particular level of economic affluence, how can we organise our economies and societies and their subsystems (e.g. public and private financial sector, enterprises, social assurance, distributional justice) as to assure well-being of all?
We invite scholars and researchers from all over the world, but particularly those based in the Asian-Pacific region to propose their thoughts and research results to tackle the aforementioned questions and thus, contribute to the success of the conference in solving some of the burning contemporary issues of sustainable development.
