The School of Chemical Sciences at Universiti Sains Malaysia is one of the largest in Malaysia pursuing a diverse and vigorous chemistry programs both in teaching and research. The school occupies a four storey building which houses research and teaching facilities. An annex was recently added due to the expansion of analytical and industrial chemistry programs.

Since its establishment in June 1969, the school has undergone tremendous development. It now has a group of academic and technical staff well qualified to service the various programs currently being offered which is designed in accordance with the needs of the nation and industries.

Research are being conducted in individual laboratories as well as in spacious graduate laboratories containing equipments necessary for advanced chemical research. The major instruments available in the department includes a 300 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, high-end quadrupole mass spectrometer with gas-chromatograph and particle-beam liquid chromatography interface, several FT-IR including high resolution FT-IR and a few other analytical instruments. Furthermore, the University of Science, Malaysia with Schools of other Sciences and Engineering and a School of Medicine have availables advanced equipments such as X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope and ion-coupled plasma-atomic spectrometer to name a fews. These instruments are available for research and teaching.

Also within the chemistry building are electronic and glass-blowing workshop manned by full-time personnel. Other facilities within the university is available through the Centre for Technical Facilities.
