world.

The theme of the first conference is 'Islamic Political Economy In Capitalist Globalization: An Agenda For Change'. This conference already held the view that the ad Deen as a world-global system should be the proper methodology in Islamic studies.

The conference has since evolved into a series held every two years and instituted as a USM tradition.

ISLAMIC CURRENCY

ISNET-USM established the GOLD DINAR RESEARCH GROUP that undertakes to promote Islamic currency (dinar, dirham and e-dinar).

INTERNATIONAL PONDOK-UNIVERSITY NETWORKING PROJECT

This is a project aimed at networking traditional education entities, in the form of pondok, pesantren etc. with USM and other universities. The project involves the voluntary upgrading of the infrastructure and curriculum of these traditional education centres through the help of the campus community. New pondoks are also envisaged to be established following the concept of interactions between traditional and modern education system. A new educational route will be the outcome where traditions are not neglected but will be reinforced by the knowledge and understanding of the challenges of the time. The participating institutions include some pondoks and universities from Malaysia, Southern Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, Mexico, Scotland, Spain, Morocco, Gambia and England.

Financial support will be through a waqf-based development mechanism and grants from government bodies and the private sector.

Note - This institution will be a feeder to the Perlis International Matriculation College which in turn will be the feeder to Achnagairn College, Scotland.

PUBLICATIONS

Journal of Alternative Political Economy (JAPE) - ISSN 1511-3353

Chief Editor: Mohamad Abdad Mohamad Zain, Assoc. Prof.

School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia

Journal of Alternative Political Economy (JAPE) is dedicated to Islamic Political Economy. Islamic Political Economy articulates a holistic perspective of change in the integral-taqwa relations between insan and The Creator, between societal constituents and between sciences. On the plane of praxis, it is the pursuance of an ad Deen beyond the dialectics of laissez faire capitalism and collective - communism. It negates the politico/economic divide paradigm where thinking 'politically' is actually irrelevant to recognition of the power mechanisms of modern society and to think 'economically' is to accept the paradigm itself. Academically this is a transvaluation of dominant and paralysing societal values in dynamic transformative terms without resorting to the entrapping dialectical method.

JAPE is a bi-annual publication, launched in 1998 with an inaugural Volume 1, Number 1 in January 1999.
