OVERVIEW
This conference forms part of the International Islamic Political Economy Conference series organised by ISNET-USM since 1994. Islamic Political Economy articulates a holistic perspective of change in the integral-taqwa relations between insan and The Creator, between societal constituents and between sciences. On the plane of praxis, it is the pursuance of an Ad-Din beyond the dialectics of laissez faire capitalism and collective-communism. It negates the politico/economic divide paradigm where thinking 'politically' is actually irrelevant to recognition of the power mechanisms of modern society and to think 'economically' is to accept the paradigm itself. Academically this is a challenge to the transvaluation of all values in dynamic transformative terms without resorting to the entrapping dialectical method. For the 4th conference the theme is 'Asia-Europe Muslim Partnership'. This is a new dimension in East-West relationship.
RATIONALE
The theme particularly points to the transvaluation of Asia-Europe relations and discovering new paradigms in the era of globalisation and outmoded colonial ties. Islam is showing ever increasing presence in the West. For the Muslim, anti-West statements make no sense when the indigenous West accepts Islam. East-West polarity disolves with worldwide Islam. Challenges of globalisation undoubtedly brings the need for a concerted response from Muslims worldwide. Perhaps, on this score, an area yet to be explored seriously is the potential of Muslims in Asia collaborating strategically with Muslims in Europe. Since the fall of Andalusia, Muslims in Europe (as well as in Asia) have faced much hardship - socially, politically, economically and even still physically as in Albania, Bosnia, Chechnya and Kosova. Nevertheless, Muslim populations in Europe continue to grow rapidly, and with that, their political-economic importance. We are now seeing the emergence of an Islamic Revivalism in Europe. It is now timely for Muslims in Asia to form partnerships with their counterparts in Europe in exploring and optimizing various opportunities of this new millenium.
OBJECTIVE
The ultimate objective of the conference is in providing a platform for relevant scholarly exchange as well as for exploring the potentials of transmadina business, scientific and cultural ventures between Muslims in the two distinct parts of the world, and subsequently, in establishing a long-term mechanism for a continued collaboration, possibly through the formation of an Asia-Europe Muslim Foundation.
