Training
All mentors are required to undergo TWO levels of training as determined by the Mentors’ Committee. The mentors will be trained by experts from the fields of counselling and social work. The topics to be introduced at the first training session are as follows: Mentors system and its role Role and Importance of helping services Self awareness Psychosocial Needs of Children and Adolescents Psychosocial Needs of Adults and Senior Citizens Personality and Behaviour Fundamentals of Rendering Assistance/ Support Problem Solving Process Values and the Ethics of Helping Skills Information and Referral System Introduction to Conflict, Anger, Stress and Crisis Management At the second level, the mentors will be trained using the Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) curriculum. This training is an outcome of a collaborative effort between USM and National Board of Certified Counselors International (NBCC-I). At the end of the first training session, it is hoped that all mentors who have attended this workshop can provide mentoring services to those in need of such services.
