Master of Arts (Communication)

The Master of Arts (Communication) programme is broad based to meet the needs of a wide range of candidates. It emphasises communication theory and research and their applications to communication policy and practices. The programme is offered via two modes.

(A)   Master of Arts(Communication)-Mixed Mode.
This mode provides students with the opportunity to develop sound understanding of major communication theories and research specifically in the study of journalism, communication and societal issues, technology and culture.

Course Structure
Students are required to complete 40 units comprising three core courses and a dissertation.

Core Courses (12 units)

  • Advanced Communication Theory.
  • Quantitative Communication Research Methods.
  • Qualitative Communication Research Methods.

Dissertation (28 units)

Students are required to conduct a research in a communication-related area under the supervision of an academic staff and write a dissertation of about 25,000 words.

(B) Master of Arts(Communication)-Research Mode.
The second mode caters to students who already posses a strong theoretical background and wish to undertake independent research.

Admission requirements

  • A relevant first degree with honours or its equivalent from a recognised university.
  • Relevant working experience in the field of communication will be an added advantage.
  • Malaysian students should obtain a least a credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM Level or its equivalent.
  • Foreign students should have English proficiency of TOEFL (550)or IELTS Band 6. Alternatively, they must pass the Universiti Sains Malaysia Intensive English at Level Three.

Course Duration
Both the mixed mode  and research  mode  are offered on a full-time or part-time basis.
