Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been developing and expanding well since its inception, which started with the enrolment of 57 science students. Now, USM offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 25,000 students. USM has also become a well known university locally and internationally. Moreover, USM is one of the four universities in Malaysia that have been identified as a research-intensive in Malaysia . Recently, USM was the one and only university in Malaysia selected as the pioneer of the Accelerated Program for Excellence (APEX).

Universiti Sains Malaysia portrays itself as a university in a garden, rather than just a normal university. It takes a lot more to be known as a “university in a garden? This concept is designed to depict the close affinity between its roles and function as an institution of higher learning amidst a garden setting. The concept invites us to preserve the campus greenery as part of efforts to develop intellects who are environmentally-conscious. Besides, the wellness centre, which was previously known as the health centre, has a role in promoting wellness among the students and even university staff.
